Huber’s Cafe 411 SW 3rd Ave, Portland, OR 97204
The fact that Huber’s Cafe is the oldest restaurant in Portland is reason enough to pay a visit, but it’s definitely not the only thing they have going for them. As much of a sucker as I am for any place that transports you to another era with the architecture, decor, and ambiance like 135-year-old Huber’s easily does, I am pleased that they can also satisfy my hankerings for tasty eats and libations. They’re known for their traditional turkey dinners, however their steak is also delicious. And a trip to Huber’s wouldn’t seem complete without ordering their world-famous Spanish Coffee, featuring an elaborate, tableside preparation. At Huber’s, this drink consists of Bacardi 151 rum, Bols Triple Sec, Kahlua, coffee, fresh whipped cream and a touch of nutmeg on top (and don’t forget the fire and 5-foot streams of liquor arching perfectly into the glass!). They have a streetside cafe, including outdoor seating, however I much prefer the bar, accessible by walking through the front dining room. Or, impress your friends with the “secret” entrance: just use the doors to the right of the cafe entrance to enter the Historic Oregon Pioneer Building and you’ll find the bar at the end of the hallway on the left. 4 Stars on Yelp. $$
