Portland’s top restaurants & chefs offer $29 3-course meals for Portland Dining Month

One of Portland’s most anticipated culinary events is Portland Dining Month. For the entire month of March, over 100 Portland restaurants will be offering three-course meals for just $29 per person. Some of the participating restaurants scarcely offer one entree at that price, let alone THREE courses! Now’s the perfect time to try some of those restaurants that everyone’s been talking about, or that have been on your foodie to-do list since you read their acclaimed yelp reviews.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a truly Portland event unless there was a non-profit beneficiary involved. If you book your reservation using the provided Open Table links for the various restaurants below, Portland Dining Month will make a donation to the Oregon Food Bank. 72 of the 100+ Portland Dining Month restaurants are participating in the Open Table reservation system, and you’ll find the complete list by clicking here. To see the complete list of all restaurants participating in Portland Dining Month, including each of their 3-course menus, click here.

All of the restaurants are accessible by public transportation, but featured below are 31 of my favorites, along with TriMet links to the nearest bus, MAX, and streetcar stops. Don’t worry if the restaurant you want to visit isn’t on my list; just use TriMet’s trip planning page to enter your starting location, then the ending address of your desired Portland Dining Month participating restaurant and you’ll get a detailed trip itinerary. Enjoy!

Restaurants on the Route: Bus Line 19 – Woodstock/Glisan

The bus line 19-Woodstock/Glisan connects Mt. Scott, SE Portland, Woodstock, Eastmoreland, Portland City Center, Laurelhurst, and Gateway. This route is almost like a double route, as it starts out in SE Portland, travels all the way downtown, then all the way back out to NE Portland. There are so many fantastic restaurants along this route that I really spent some time discerning which ones would be included in this diverse collection of the best. Below are my current restaurant recommendations that made the cut.

“This place started my love affair with Bun Bo Hue. It’s that good! The namesake dish here is one of the most authentic and flavorful versions out there, the gold standard for Portland. The rich broth is spicy and tangy, and it comes with noodles and all the right meats. I usually get mine without the pork hock and the pig’s blood. It comes with a huge plate of veggies – most places don’t give you shredded banana flower, but they do here. It’s a hole in the wall eatery, so don’t go in with your fancy pants expecting much. Parking is in the back.” ~Caroline N. on Yelp

“Starting life as a food cart in SE Portland, rarely has a spot been so aptly named. Rocking an ancient charcuterie moniker that truly serves as a harbinger of things to come, Lardo is a sandwich shop that worships at the altar of  bovine & swine. Using old-world techniques, contemporary flourishes and a gonzo approach, Lardo proudly celebrates its excesses. Pushing a menu that features pork drenched double burgers, a giant meatball Banh Mi, and hand-cut french fries (again) smothered in pork, Lardo also has beer. Lots of beer, actually. Rotating taps of knee-buckling craft brew greatness, backed-up with a refreshing mix of premium cocktails. I’m no expert on Japanese culture, but I do know that making sushi is considered an art. The presentation on the plate is as important as how it tastes, and enhances the overall experience of the meal. Miyamoto Sushi seems to have mastered the art of creating beautifully plated dishes with some of the most fresh, complex flavors that I’ve been lucky enough to have dance across my palate. It’s exactly what you want a sushi restaurant to be. The fish is super fresh, the produce is vibrant, and the flavors are exceptionally dynamic. My go-to item on the menu is the the “Monkey Brain” appetizer. It’s a whole avocado stuffed with spicy tuna, crab, and seaweed salad topped with tobiko, green onions, eel sauce, and spicy sauce. Another of my favorites is the Crazy Roll from their specialty rolls menu: spicy tuna, salmon, cream cheese, and avacodo, “flash fried” and topped with spicy sauce & eel sauce. 4 Stars on Yelp. $$

It’s easy to get excited about the culinary scene in Portland, and it’s establishments like The Country Cat Dinnerhouse & Bar that make my excitement so distinct. Country Cat serves brunch as well as lunch and dinner, however on our visit it was a memorable dish from their brunch menu that got my attention: an Eggs Benedict comprised of a sweet cream biscuit with smoked Steelhead, caramelized onions, preserved lemon hollandaise, wilted greens & home fries. It was very good. So good in fact that we returned for lunch on another day to further explore the menu, this time with the Caramelized Tomato, Farro & Kale soup, with Parsley Pesto and Parmesan Cheese. The soup was a joy; an exquisite culmination of Chef Adam Sappington’s culinary sensibilities and interpretation of Northwest approach. Chef Adam creates simple, authentically American dishes. His southern roots are evident, and they highlight a menu that has been filtered through Northwest influence. It’s no wonder he has received a semi-finalist nomination for Best Chef Northwest in 2012, 2013, and 2014. 4 Stars on Yelp. $$

If the words “sour beer” are not ones you’ve heard yourself say while ordering in a bar or restaurant, then Cascade Brewing needs to be moved to the top of your pub crawl list. The brewing of sour beer is an old-world technique that has been alive in Europe since the mid 1800’s, however the brewing of sour beer in the US is a relatively new undertaking. Here in the Portland, Cascade Brewing is a pioneer of the northwest style sour beer movement, and the way they pair food with sour beer is as much a culinary art form as any other food/libation pairing. The endless flavor profiles, character, and depth of sour beers make them a fine a choice for pairing with food. They provide sharp, focused acidity, with good body and mouth feel. They are a balance of sweet and fruity with a light tartness. Cascade Brewing features more than 18 rotating taps, with a predominantly sour lineup at any given time, as well as a food menu with recommended beer pairings. While not extensive, the food items are executed well and absolute magic when paired with the sour beers. And don’t miss Tap It Tuesday, when at 6:00PM they tap something new, experimental, or a favorite from the cellar, which has the potential to provide a once-in-a-lifetime beer experience. 4 Stars on Yelp. $$
